More Easing Warranted Unless Economy Improves: Fed Minutes Show
The Federal Reserve is likely to deliver another
round of monetary stimulus "fairly soon" unless the economy improves
considerably, minutes from the central bank's August meeting show .
Many participants at the Fed’s meeting said a new large- scale
asset-purchase program “could provide additional support for the
economic recovery,” according to the minutes. Policy makers said in a
statement after the meeting that they will step up record stimulus if
needed to spur growth and cut a jobless rate stuck above 8 percent since
February 2009 .
While the meeting was held before a recent improvement in the economic
data, including a stronger-than-expected July reading for U.S.
employment, policymakers were pretty categorical about their
dissatisfaction with the current outlook.
